Enhance your concert experience with our pre-concert talks!

Music off the Record is an informative and engaging way to learn about the music and get valuable insight into what you will hear at each upcoming concert. Dr. Ken Owen will take you through music theory, guided listening, and the program's historical and cultural context. Music off the Record will enrich your enjoyment of a familiar piece and guide your introduction to the myriad textures, colors, and moods of something you may never have heard before. The result? A heightened enjoyment and understanding of the entire concert! All Music off the Record events are FREE and are held at Fairfield Inn & Suites Puyallup (202 15th Avenue Southwest, Puyallup) at 7pm, with complimentary coffee and cookies!

Series Presenter

Kenneth Owen is a professor of music at Pierce College Puyallup where he conducts the choirs and teaches music theory and music appreciation.  Ken has directed many notable academic ensembles including choirs and orchestras at Arizona State University, Brigham Young University and others.

Ken has worked with such conductors as Paul Salomonovich, Dale Warland, Craig Jessop, Simon Carrington, and Jerry McCoy, and performed with Brigham Young University Singers, the Utah Chamber Artists, the Orchestra at Temple Square and the Mormon Tabernacle Choir.

Ken received the Bachelor of Music degree in piano performance and pedagogy from the University of Utah, where he studied with Frank Wienstock and Dr. Barlow Bradford. Ken went on to study conducting with Dr. Ronald Staheli and to work with the renowned choirs at Brigham Young University. There he received the Master of Music degree in Choral conducting and also studied orchestral conducting, which he continued as a cognate study at ASU with Dr. Timothy Russell. At ASU Ken received his Doctorate of Musical Arts degree in conducting.
