Description:
Welcome the New Year with a concert showcasing the artists of the Northwest Sinfonietta. In this unconducted performance, led by Co-concertmaster Brittany Boulding, Seattle Symphony principal cellist Efe Baltacigil will play Haydn's Cello Concerto No. 1 in C Major. After being lost for almost 200 years, this concerto was discovered by an archivist in 1961, and rapidly became a favorite of cellists and audiences the world over. One of Haydn's earlier works, it is believed to have been composed for Joseph Weigl, a gifted cellist of the Haydn's Esterhazy Orchestra.
In the second portion of the program, the Northwest Sinfonietta winds take charge with a virtuosic performance of Mozart's Serenade No. 10 for Winds, the Gran Partita. Thirteen winds come together to perform the seven movements of this composition, described as "glorious" and "sublime" by contemporary critics of Mozart. This composition was performed only once, and only in part, during Mozart's lifetime.
