The Four Seasons (Puyallup)

About This Performance

The talents of Sinfonietta's Co-concertmasters, Brittany Boulding and Denise Dillenbeck, are on full display in this program inspired by the changing seasons.

Vivaldi's immortal collection of concertos published in 1725 are known the world over for their evocative sounds and virtuoso demands on the soloist. Centuries later, Astor Piazzolla was inspired to write his own version, infused with the rhythm and soul of the Argentinean tango. Warm up your winter with an afternoon featuring these two remarkable works, side by side!

The Sonnets:

Vivaldi was one of the first composers to compose what is later referred to as 'programmatic music': instrumental works meant to express a certain story or concept.  Each concerto was published with a sonnet- presumably written by the composer himself- which describe the effects each piece evokes.  Click here to see the sonnet accompanying each season.

From a summer thunderstorm, to an Autumn hunting party, or slipping on ice in winter, these poems add another dimension to such a well known and beloved work.  For this performance, Northwest Sinfonietta is joined by local poet and writer Jim Cantu.  Mr. Cantu will also present a series of works during the Piazzolla Four Seasons of Buenos Aires.
