The Northwest Sinfonietta strings shine in this concert, led by co-concertmaster Denise Dillenbeck.  The program opens with Mendelssohn's String Symphony No. 2, in D major.  Composed while he was a boy studying with his mentor, Carl Friedrich Zelter, the three short movements show Mendelssohn's strong Classical and Baroque influences, even as he became one of the first Romantic composers.

Elgar's  Introduction and Allegro was composed in 1905.  Listen for the lyrical theme played by solo viola in the Introduction, recalling folk songs Elgar heard as a boy in Wales.  The Allegro is described, by the composer, as a "devil of a fugue".  You will enjoy the sweeping polyphonic textures played with grace and virtuosic artistry.

Completing the program is Tchaikovsky's lovely Serenade for Strings.  Another Romantic period piece, the structure of this work harkens back to an earlier time. Its elegant sonatina, lively waltz, and melancholic elegy all lead to a spectacular and uplifting ending, sure to inspire.
